Marketing needs IT's big data analytical skills to understand their customers better. Manufacturing and logistics operations need remote monitoring and analytics to constantly track the health of their operations. We'll discuss ways that companies such as General Motors, Starbucks, John Deere, Ford Motor Co., GE, Royal Caribbean cruise lines, and others are changing their IT operations to play by these new rules.

Chris Murphy is editor of InformationWeek and lead columnist for InformationWeek Global CIO, an ongoing editorial series dedicated to IT management and strategy. 

Murphy interacts with the most influential global CIOs, having interviewed executives and profiled the innovation at dozens of the world's largest and most technology-intensive global companies, including General Motors, Procter & Gamble, UPS, FedEx, Union Pacific, and Ford.  Murphy has tracked how companies dealt with the rise of the Internet, offshore outsourcing, e-commerce, social networking, and now cloud computing, big data, and the mobile Internet.  With more than a decade of covering IT strategy, Murphy has provided clarity and insight into today’s most challenging business technology issues to InformationWeek’s global audience of more than 9.7 million IT leaders. In July 2012, Murphy was the first to break the news that General Motors plans to end its decades-long reliance on IT outsourcing and bring nearly all of its tech work in-house.

Murphy has won a U.S. ASBPE award for feature writing, and his business journalism career includes leading a newsroom in Budapest, Hungary, and covering the automotive industry for a daily newspaper. A frequent speaker at business and technology conferences, Murphy has shared his expertise and insight at events such as the Wells Fargo Technology Summit and the annual InformationWeek 500 Conference.

Murphy has a degree in economics and journalism from Michigan State University and an MBA from the University of Virginia, and he has passed the Chartered Financial Analyst exams.
